Now what better way to spend a nice winters eve? A toasty fire, a book, some knitting, and a nice cup of hot chocolate… How about some straight up good for you antioxidant filled 100% cocoa instead? Brewed 100% cocoa beans?? Sounds horrible and bitter right? Well the first words out of John’s mouth when he took a sip of this stuff were “wow, that’s smooth”. I totally agree with him, I was actually expecting a much harsher, in your face taste based on how strong the grounds smelled (it was a delicious smell, but strong none the less). In the end it was a pleasant surprise and I’ve really been enjoying the stuff…. you probably want to know what “the stuff” is huh? It’s called Choffy, and I’d never heard of it until a person at the company contacted me and asked if I wanted to try some on the house. Of course I said I’d be happy to try it

All you need to make it is preferably a french press (you can use a drip coffee pot too). Add the grounds in with some hot water, sit for 5 minutes, plunge and serve. I added a little half and half to mine and it was perfect, others might want to add a little sweet but I found it excellent without it! I’ll admit it’s a little pricey for an everyday treat ($15 for 12oz), but I’d totally get this for special occasions or as a gift for someone

I don’t think I could ask for a more perfect evening, I’m officially an old woman at the ripe old age of 30… what about all of you? What’s your perfect evening? Something relaxing and staying in like me? Or out on the town? Would it involve some 100% cocoa? Now that I think about it, maybe I’ll add a swig of amaretto into my next cup of Choffy… now THAT sounds like a good night in!

As most of you know by now, we were featured as one of Dr. Oz’s Best of the Best on Monday Sept. 19th! It was a honor to be chosen, and we were so pleased at the things he highlighted about Choffy. You can see our part of the show here.

The response to the show has been immense! So immense it crashed our very hefty web server on Monday. The amazing team at TelosHost got us back up and running extremely quickly, but the deluge of hits and orders has continued!

We take a craftsman’s approach making Choffy. We believe that it is our responsibility to make each variety of Choffy an amazing taste experience. As artisans, we make Choffy in small batches to maintain the greatest amount of control over the flavor and freshness in each bag. But we hate to make you wait. We are literally working around the clock to answer your calls and emails, and make sure we can get Choffy to you as quickly as possible.

Serious Eats is a serious food website. The tell it like it is, and are well respected for their opinions. They recently reviewed Choffy here.

The brewed cup is remarkably full bodied, picking up some of the protein from the beans as well as tons of flavor. If you’re a chocolate lover who mostly enjoys sweet candies, this stuff may not be for you; it’s naturally bitter, with fruity acidity. But if you get excited about the complex flavors of high-cacao content chocolate, you should look into Choffy.

The Ivory Coast version is smooth and focused, with a bright tartness. La Española is earthier, almost smokey, though some tasters found it a little muddy. Both are good with a scant teaspoon of sugar.

We noticed that the Serious Eats crew tried brewing it in a Chemex coffee maker first and commented that the steeping really makes a difference in the flavor. We agree. The flavor from our premium roasted beans is more full if they spend a little time steeping. That being said, use a wire or gold filter in your coffee maker for the best taste. As one savvy commenter mentioned “…How could adding a paper filter to the chocolate-making process make sense under any circumstances?” We couldn’t agree more. It doesn’t mean we haven’t used a paper filter in a pinch, but the flavor is always better without the paper.

Andi and I just returned from the Direct Sales Association’s annual meeting. For more information on the DSA go to their website at dsa.org.

This annual meeting is always a wealth of information on our industry and our industry neighbors. As a young company this gives us a chance to find mentorship from companies that were in our shoes only a few years before like; Scentsy, Team Beachbody (P90X), Rodan + Fields (the creators of ProActiv) and Silpada Designs. We have the chance to learn from the hard won experience from companies that have become household names like; Avon, Unilever, Mary Kay and the Pampered Chef. I am continually impressed by the willingness of the leaders of these companies to offer support, advise, and candid feedback. In my professional experience it is almost unprecedented and makes me proud to be apart of it.

We learned from Jason Dorsey about Gen Y, the generation that many of you, your downlines and customers are all apart. We have come to understand that none of you are actually reading this email, and that all further communication from Choffy will come via text. (just kidding) We did learn some things that sparked some great ideas on how we can better serve all of our distributors and customers. Those ideas will start being implemented right away.

Ray Chambers, is a man with an unbelievable legacy of success. His businesses have been, and continue to be, hugely lucrative. But he didn’t speak to us specifically about making money. He talked to us about how to be happy, by making a difference in the world around us. I would be surprised if any of us hasn’t looked ourselves in the mirror and said, "Is this as good as it gets? What can I do to be happier?" Ray spoke of how after he had achieved all of his very lofty financial goals, that he was still left empty. He began seeking knowledge from "experts" from varying religions, ideologies and backgrounds. He found a couple common threads. I will mention only one of the pillars he shared.

The most direct path to happiness is in the service of others.

I have found this a lesson that I continue to learn over and over. The service rendered can be large or small. It can affect millions or just one person. The effect on your personal happiness can be the same.

As an executive team we hear stories of gratitude from people who have had Choffy effect their health in a positive way, and others who have be able to lose addictions. We hear stories of people grateful for great customer and upline service. We hear about how our distributors are striving to help their communities and the world at large, with Choffy as a vehicle to do so. It is wonderful.

Jason and I started this company with the goal of helping people. It is at the forefront of every meeting we have. We don’t feel however, that we have done a good enough job emphasizing that mission to you. We are striving to build a culture of service at Choffy. In many ways you have inspired us. We want to share more regarding Choffy’s service oriented goals and ambitions. Stay tuned.

Alec helped the organizer Stephanie Olsen put the event “Dancing for Japan” in Orange County California together.

I advised her on how I usually produce benefit shows, and I booked the band; Six Shooter…featuring Ginger Pauley. Other than dancing a few Swing and Latin numbers, and selling lots of Choffy, I performed one piece. I am part of a bellydance/drum duo called Global Groove, in which the lovely Sarah Al Nour dances and I play a djembe, using Arabic, African, Ballroom, and improvised rhythms.

We are honored that Alec thought of Choffy to help:

Basically I sold Choffy throughout the evening and donated the proceeds to the cause. All funds raised went to help the victims of the disasters in Japan.
